Description

A delicious cheesy pastry bake loaded with pepperoni and topped with fresh basil.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 sheets puff pastry
  • 150 g sliced pepperoni
  • 2 cups shredded mozzarella cheese
  • 8 slices sliced provolone cheese
  • 1 egg (beaten for egg wash)
  • optional grated Parmesan cheese (for garnish)
  • 1 teaspoon dried Italian herbs
  • to taste salt
  • to taste black pepper
  • for garnish fresh basil leaves

Instructions

  1. Preheat Oven: Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).

  2. Prepare the Pastry: Roll out the puff pastry sheets on a floured surface to ensure they fit your baking dish.

  3. Layer the Ingredients: Place one sheet of puff pastry on the bottom of a greased baking dish. Layer half of the mozzarella cheese evenly over the pastry. Add a layer of pepperoni slices over the cheese. Place the provolone slices on top of the pepperoni. Sprinkle the remaining mozzarella cheese over the provolone. Cover with the second sheet of puff pastry.

  4. Seal and Prepare for Baking: Press the edges of the pastry sheets together to seal. Brush the top with beaten egg for a golden finish. Sprinkle with Parmesan cheese, salt, black pepper, and Italian herbs.

  5. Bake: Bake in the preheated oven for 25-30 minutes or until the pastry is puffed and golden brown.

  6. Garnish and Serve: Allow it to cool slightly before slicing. Garnish with fresh basil leaves before serving.

Notes

  • Make sure the puff pastry is fully thawed before working with it to prevent cracking.
  • For extra flavor, add a layer of tomato sauce or pesto between the cheese and pepperoni.
  • Experiment with different cheese varieties like cheddar or gouda for more complexity.
  • This dish can be made ahead and reheated; it’s perfect for a quick snack or appetizer.
