Description

A delightful lemon custard dessert topped with meringue, perfect for any gathering.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/4 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 3 large egg yolks
  • 2 cups whole milk
  • 2 teaspoons grated lemon zest
  • 1/3 cup fresh lemon juice
  • 3 large egg whites
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar (for meringue)
  • Lemon slices (for garnish)
  • Powdered sugar (for dusting)

Instructions

  1. Preheat the Oven: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
  2. Prepare the Custard: In a medium saucepan, whisk together 1 cup of sugar, flour, and salt. Gradually add the egg yolks and milk, whisking constantly until smooth. Cook over medium heat, stirring constantly, until the mixture thickens and comes to a boil. Remove from heat and stir in the lemon zest and lemon juice.
  3. Prepare the Meringue: In a clean, dry bowl, beat the egg whites on medium speed until they form soft peaks. Gradually add 1/4 cup sugar, beating on high speed until stiff and glossy peaks form.
  4. Assemble the Dessert: Pour the lemon custard into a baking dish. Spread the meringue over the custard, sealing it to the edges of the dish.
  5. Bake: Bake in the preheated oven for about 15-20 minutes, or until the meringue is golden brown.
  6. Cool and Serve: Allow the dessert to cool for at least 30 minutes. Garnish with lemon slices and dust with powdered sugar before serving.

Notes

  • Whisking: Ensure you whisk continuously to prevent the custard from burning or becoming lumpy.
  • Zest: Use fresh lemons for zest and juice for the best flavor.
  • Meringue: Make sure no egg yolk is in the whites for a stable meringue.
  • Cooling: Let the dessert cool completely to allow the flavors to meld.
